The Pictorial School of Fiemme

From the beginning of the XVIIth century, distinguished representatives of the artistic current named Pictorial School were born in Fiemme Valley.

The first important painter was Giuseppe Alberti; as a result of a brilliant career, at the end of the seventeenth century, he returned to his birthplace in order to teach artistic techniques to talented local young men. By letting promising artists work in his studio, he established the first and only artistic school in Trentino region. The pupils trained in Alberti's atelier carried on and updated their master's figurative style, whose basis were in the late Venetian mannerism.

The strengthening of local economy livened up a growing interest in works of art and their collection. In the XVIIth century, local squires became more and more demanding in their commissions. Cristoforo Unterperger, a wood dealer, father of the celebrated generation of distinguished painters, approached arts both as decorator and as collector. His sons contributed remarkably to the artistic tradition of the Valley, and their works of art are nowadays exhibited in the rooms of the Palace together with other artists’ of the same School.
