History

The districts of Fiemme

Woods pastures and huts were exploited in rotation by the villages according to a hundred-years old alpine custom.

A document dated 1245 lists four districts (Castello, Cavalese-Varena, Tesero and Carano-Daiano) and mentions annual rotation as a traditional and normal fact. Districts were redefined in 1315-1318, and yearly rotation was turned into a four year cycle (during three years both grazing and mowing were allowed, on the fourth year only grazing). This partitioning lasted until 1847 when rotation was canceled. The remaining land, common to all villages, was divided so that each district could graze or mow its land or rent it to third parties.
