History

Fiemme valley jurisdiction

In the administration of justice Fiemme valley was divided in two parts, the boundaries of which did not correspond to the church nor to the confines of the community.

In the main part of the territory, justice was administered by the bishop’s judge or gastaldo. The judge lived permanently in Cavalese; his jurisdiction spread over Cavalese and the other villages except for Castello di Fiemme and for those families who lived in the roman houses.

Hearings were usually held in the main square of Cavalese, on Saturdays and on two special occasions on 1st May and on 11th November. The so-called banco de la reson – bench of the reason – that stands in the park was not used for judicial hearings, but it was probably the place where the assembly met on 15th August.

In Fiemme, the community and the jurisdiction were strictly separated in functions, competences, components, seats and territory.
